When to Replace Crossbow / Archery String
Proper maintenance of your crossbow is crucial for performance and safety. One common maintenance task is replacing the string on your crossbow / archery bow. At least every 2 years (but preferably annually) or after about 500 shots, the string should be replaced. If you notice signs of wear earlier, like such as fraying or separation into strands, the string needs to be replaced sooner. Here's a brief guide to help you understand the process:
Replacing a (Cross)bow String
- Identify The Model: The first step in replacing a string is to determine the type of (cross)bow you own. This is important because the string replacement process varies between different models, and each model has their own type of string. When you know the name of your model, it's easier to find the name of the string too.
- For crossbow models with the naming convention of MK-XB[number], the string is often named MK-XBSnumber.
- When the crossbow model doesn't have XB in its name, such as MK-TCS1or MK-180, the string is usually named MK-[crossbow number/name]S; for example, MK-TCS1S or MK-180S.
- For archery bows, the model name is usually build with MK-CB[model number] or MK-RB[model number] and the string is then called MK-CBS[model number]; for example, CB55B becomes CBS55.
- Recurve model: If you own a recurve model, you're in luck. The string can be changed without the use of a bow press, making the process straightforward and convenient.
- Compound model: For compound models, a bow press is necessary to replace the string. This tool ensures the process is done safely and correctly, preventing damage to the (cross)bow.
- Seek Professional Assistance: With these things, it's better to be careful. If you're unsure about how to safely replace the string or you don't possess the required materials, we strongly recommend heading to a local archery store or club. They can guide you in person. We're eager to assist you, but some things are easier done in person.
Example of damage
Both of these were long due for replacement. If your string or cable looks like this, stop using your bow or crossbow and first replace them!
