Cam and Cable Replacement
For compound crossbows and archery bows it can be difficult to know when the cam and cable should be replaced, so in this article we'll help you.
Cam Set Replacement
Cams and their parts only need to be replaced when they have been damaged. This could be a nock breaking off, hairline fractures, or the metal warping after extensive use. After a dryfire, it is also recommended to inspect them properly to see if they are in need of replacement.
Examples of damage:
This example is missing a nock on the left side, where the metal is revealed. On the right side, you can see what the part was supposed to look like. The cable can no longer be safely attached to it as it can fly off when it's put under tension.
In this example the cam has sustained quite some damage. While minor cosmetic damage is generally harmless, it's best to replace the cam when any of the damage seems to have warped the metal or cut into it. In this example, the cut at the top right has created a deep groove in the metal and damaged the structural integrity of the cam.
Cable Set Replacement
Cables should be replaced annually, every ~500 shots or as soon as they show signs of fraying or damage. It's best to do so at the same time as the string replacement. More on string replacements here: Replacing crossbow or archery string
Examples of damage:
Both of these were long due for replacement. If your string or cable looks like this, stop using your bow or crossbow and first replace them!
Consideration
Replacing cams and cables can be difficult to do so yourself, especially in a safe manner. We recommend going to a local archery club or store if you're uncertain of how to replace these parts safely.
